Common CamStudio Errors and Solutions
CamStudio Common Errors and Solutions

1. The specified device handle is invalid in stop()
2. "waveoutgetselectcontrol() failed" when recording audio from speakers.

Watch this short video to find solutions to the above common CamStudio errors.

CamStudio Error: The specified device handle is invalid in stop()

For this error, check the Audio and Video options under “Options” in the menu bar.In my case the compressor in the video option when the issue happened was INTEL IYUV CODEC.

I changed that to Microsoft Video 1, and the recording started to work!
Surprisingly, when I switch it back to “INTEL IYUV CODEC” it worked this time, and again, and again. I did not dig around a lot on the Root Cause of this error. It started to work, so I left it at that.
If this helps, share!

CamStudio error – WaveoutGetSelectControl() failed

Here are a few things you need to check:
a ) RECORDING DEVICES ON YOUR SYSTEM
  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray > recording devices
  • See which recording devices are available and which one is in use
  • Double-click on the one that is in use and click on the “LEVEL” tab
  • See if it is not “0” or muted
  • To confirm if this is working fine, click on “LISTEN” tab > check “LISTEN TO THIS DEVICE”. Try to say something and the computer should playback (provided you have speakers on if you are using external speakers :D).
b) AUDIO OPTIONS ON CAMSTUDIO
  • Open CamStudio > Options > Audio Options > Audio Options for Microphone
  • Audio Capture Device > Select the one that is in use by the system (checked in “a”) or leave it to “default input device”.
That is all! These things are preliminary for CamStudio to record audio from the right source.

GO AHEAD EVEN IF ERROR THROWN, YOU’D BE SURPRISED!!!
If you still see the error “WaveoutGetSelectControl() failed” when selecting “Record Audio from Speakers” even after checking “a’ and “b”, go right ahead and record a test. You’d be surprised it might work. I also get the same error but it worked.
