International Mobile Station Equipment Identity or IMEI number is a unique identifier for 3GPP (i.e., GSM, UMTS and LTE) and iDEN mobile phones, as well as some satellite phones devices. No two devices will have the same IMEI or MEID, which makes it a very useful tool for tracking purposes. You can quickly retrieve and record your phone's IMEI or
MEID number in a variety of different ways, depending on your device. The IMEI is only used for identifying the device and has no permanent or semi-permanent relation to the subscriber. Instead, the subscriber is identified by transmission of an IMSI number, which is stored on a SIM card that can (in theory) be transferred to any handset. [Source: Wikipedia]

It is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone, but can also be displayed on-screen on most phones by entering *#06# on the dialpad, or alongside other system information in the settings menu on smartphone operating systems.

To find out the IMEI number on Android Smartphones, go to About Phone under settings. The way to navigate to "About Device" or "About Phone" may be different for different phones but similar.

For example, on Samsung Android Phones, go to:
  • Settings > More > About Device
  • Tap on "Status"
  • Scroll till you see IMEI
Or simple dial *#06# to see your device's IMEI number displayed.

Two IMEI numbers on the same phone:
On dual SIM phones, if you dial *#06#, you will see two IMEI numbers displayed. This is normal. Dual SIM phones generally have DUAL SIM active. This means they have two separate transceivers so they need two separate IMEI numbers.
